INDIANAPOLIS – Bellarmine University senior midfielder Emily Hollander and University of Wisconsin-Parkside sophomore defender Niekie Pellens have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in women’s soccer, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Hollander recorded the game-winning goal in both of the Knights’ victories in GLVC play over the weekend while scoring three goals overall. On Friday against Drury, the Knights and Panthers were deadlocked at 1-1 in the second half when Hollander converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute for a 2-1 lead that would stand until the final whistle sounded. She then followed that game-winning goal with another one against Missouri S&T on Sunday on a Senior Day in which she was honored. In the 21st minute, the Louisville, Kentucky, native beat two defenders to track down a lead pass from teammate Abby Janszen and slotted her shot from the left side of the box inside the far post for a 1-0 advantage. The Knights went on to win the game 3-0, with Hollander capping the scoring in the 89th minute with her second goal, as she made a stellar run up the left side and deposited her shot into the far corner of the net. In total, Hollander played just 103 of the 180 minutes this past weekend, but made the most of her time on the pitch. She buried three of her five shots, with all five coming on goal. The two game-winners and the insurance goal against the Miners were Hollander’s first three scores of the season and helped Bellarmine improve to 7-1-2 in GLVC play. This is the first weekly honor for Hollander and the first for a Knight since teammate Mary Beth Gorham was recognized for her offensive efforts two weeks ago on Sept. 29.
