University of Indianapolis junior back Daniel Wellmann and senior goalkeeper Andrew Verhonik have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in men’s soccer, it was announced by the league office Monday. It is the first time UIndy has swept the weekly honors.
Verhonik earned his fourth shutout of the year Friday in a 3-0 UIndy win over UMSL, making seven saves to preserve the clean sheet. He gave up one goal in 74 minutes of play in the 6-2 win against Maryville on Sunday. On the weekend, the Plainfield, Indiana native allowed the single goal while making nine saves in more than 163 minutes in net for a goals against average of 0.55. This is the Verhonik’s second career honor as he was recognized by the league office on Oct. 21, 2013.
