University of Indianapolis junior back Daniel Wellmann and senior goalkeeper Andrew Verhonik have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in men’s soccer, it was announced by the league office Monday. It is the first time UIndy has swept the weekly honors.
Wellmann paced the UIndy offense this weekend, scoring three of the team's nine goals, while also adding an assist in Sunday's match. The junior's score Friday evening against Missouri-St. Louis came in the final two minutes of the match, icing the 3-0 win for the Greyhounds on “Braden's Night.” Wellmann scored twice Sunday in the 6-2 home win over Maryville, with both header goals coming off of set pieces on Josh Ling corner kicks. His first goal would prove to be the game-winner, while he also assisted on the Greyhounds' fourth goal of the night. He tallied seven total points on the weekend and is currently tied atop the UIndy charts in points and assists, while his five goals are second on the team. The Leutkrich, Germany native earns his second career weekly honor as he was named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 4, 2013. This is the first offensive honor in program history.
