INDIANAPOLIS – Quincy University redshirt junior quarterback Nick Lonergan and redshirt freshman linebacker Nate Rueckemann, along with Saint Joseph's College senior linebacker Gary Yeoman, have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Players of the Week in football, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Lonergan was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, Yeoman was picked Defensive Player of the Week, while Rueckemann was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
In Saturday's 42-28 win at William Jewell, Rueckemann turned the game in Quincy's favor by recovering a blocked field goal and returning it 65 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first quarter. A made field goal would have given the Cardinals a 10-0 lead, but instead the game was tied 7-7 heading into the second quarter. The Hawks turned the game in the second quarter, outscoring the hosts 21-7 in the final 15 minutes before halftime. This is the McHenry, Illinois, native's first career honor and the first special teams award for a Hawk since kicker Blake Allison was recognized on Oct. 13. This is also QU's third special teams accolade overall this year – a league high – as Eric Poindexter was honored on Sept. 29.
