INDIANAPOLIS – University of Southern Indiana seniors Tyler Pence and Julia Kohnen have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Runners of the Week for men’s and women’s cross country, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday.

It is the second sweep this season for the pair as they were honored with the first awards of the 2014 campaign on Sept. 10.  Additionally, it is the third overall sweep for USI as Kohnen was honored the following week on Sept. 17 along with men’s honoree and USI junior Johnnie Guy.

Pence finished first out 118 runners Saturday as the No. 5 Screaming Eagles won the nine-team Southern Indiana Regional Preview at Angel Mounds.  The Springfield, Illinois, native finished the eight-kilometer course in 23 minutes, 55.8 seconds, just 12.8 seconds off the school-record time of 23:43.00, set by USI and GLVC Hall of Famer Jim Nolan at the 1983 Indiana Intercollegiate.

The weekly honor is the second of Pence’s career as the first came back on Sept. 10 of this year.

On the women’s side, Kohnen posted a third-place finish out of 100 runners to lead the 12th-ranked Screaming Eagles to a third-place showing out of nine teams at the Southern Indiana Regional Preview Saturday morning.  The Florissant, Missouri, native completed the six-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 59.5 seconds, 16.1 seconds behind the winning pace set by Hillsdale College's Emily Oren.

The Screaming Eagles’ 66 points earned them third overall behind No. 6 Hillsdale (36) and No. 16 Malone (51), and ahead of fellow GLVC members Bellarmine (98) and Indianapolis (113) in the top five.

This is Kohnen’s third weekly honor both of the season and her career.

USI returns to action Nov. 8 when both squads defend their conference titles at the GLVC Championships in Romeoville, Illinois.
