INDIANAPOLIS – Quincy University junior midfielder Ashley Burton and Lewis University senior goalkeeper Mara Bennett have been named the final Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for the 2014 women’s soccer season, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Burton scored the game-winning goal in Quincy's 1-0 win Wednesday against Truman State, which garnered the No. 4 seed in the GLVC Championship Tournament. In the seventh minute, the 2012 GLVC Freshman of the Year received a pass from Bailey Greubel, settled the ball with a touch and then ripped a shot from 16 yards over the outstretched hands of Truman keeper Katie Mattingly. It was Burton's fourth goal of the season and allowed the Lady Hawks to play from in front for the first time since Oct. 12. This is the St. Louis, Missouri, native’s first weekly honor and it’s the first offensive accolade for a Lady Hawk since Jaclyn Mastroianni was recognized on Sept. 23, 2013.
