Bellarmine University’s Justin Welply (Chesterfield, Mo.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. The junior goalkeeper helped the Knights to victories over 12th-ranked UW-Parkside and 16th-ranked Lewis over the weekend.

 

In Bellarmine’s 2-0 win over visiting UW-Parkside on Friday, Welply registered four saves en route to collecting his third shutout of the season. The Rangers had outscored their opponents 23-1 entering the contest. It was the first-ever win for the Knights over UW-Parkside as they moved the series record to 1-12-1 all-time.

 

Welply notched nine saves in the Knights’ 2-1 win over visiting Lewis on Sunday. He surrendered Lewis’ only goal in the 72nd minute. The goal ended Welply’s streak of 324 scoreless minutes in goal for the Knights.

 

For the week, Welply made 13 saves and posted a goals against average of 0.50. On the season, he has a goals against average of 0.88, has made 20 saves and recorded three shutouts.

 

Bellarmine improved to 4-2-0 on the season and is undefeated (4-0) in the new Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. The Knights are 2-0-0 in the GLVC and will resume action against visiting Spalding on Sept. 11.

 

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included: Northern Kentucky’s Andy Bacon, Quincy’s Jack Wedemeier, Rockhurst’s Tom Heinemann, SIU Edwardsville’s Kevin Bielicki and UIndy’s Brian Fishback.
