INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University sophomore Bryan Wiener and Truman State University senior Abby Hempen have been named the PNC Great Lakes Valley Conference Athletes of the Week in the sports of men’s and women’s swimming and diving, it was announced by the league office on Monday.

Hempen picked up three first-place finishes at Saturday’s tri-meet at Lewis to earn her first career weekly honor.  A native of O’Fallon, Missouri, she opened the meet by swimming the second leg of the team’s 400 Medley Relay squad, and helping the Bulldog quartet break a Lewis pool record with a top time of 4:00.34 seconds.  Then, in her first individual event of the day, she picked up a first-place touch in the 200 IM, finishing with a time of 2:12.56. Finally, she closed her day with another pool record, this time in the 100 Breaststroke where she hit the wall in 1:06.00 flat.  The Bulldogs defeated both Lewis (149-56) and Lake Forest (Ill.) (163-40) in the event, as the women’s squad picked up first-place finishes in all 11 events.

Hempen is the first Bulldog to earn a weekly award since Evyn Spencer won the conference’s first-ever weekly honor on Oct. 8, 2013.
