INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University Jamie Johnson is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday. The junior guard paced the Flyers in wins against St. Edwards and No. 14 Rollins University last week.
Johnson helped No. 4 Lewis (5-0) to remain unbeaten on the season as it played in the Rollins Tournament in Winter Park, Fla. She tied her career high of 32 points in the Flyers’ 75-73 win against St. Edwards on Nov. 28 where in the final three minutes Johnson led Lewis back from a six-point deficit. The Flyers closed the game on an 11-3 run, of which Johnson scored nine of the points. In those three minutes she collected 11 points, 4-of-5 from the free throw line, and corralled a defensive rebound. The 5-8 shooting guard was 10-of-19 (.526) from the field, while connecting on 8-of-11 free throws (.727) in the victory. In Lewis’ 76-65 win over host Rollins on Nov. 29, Johnson recorded 24 points, notching her fifth consecutive game where she has scored 20 or more points this season to go along with three rebounds. She also drained 4-of-8 (.500) from beyond the arc against the Tars who shot 6-of-33 as a team from down town.
The South Holland, Ill., native averaged 28.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She shot 54 percent from the field after playing 36.5 minutes per game. This season, Johnson is averaging 23 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists each time out for the season.
The honor is Johnson’s first of her career, and the first for a Lewis player since current teammate Mariyah Brawner-Henley earned the accolade on Dec. 9, 2013.
