INDIANAPOLIS – University of Indianapolis junior guard Jordan Loyd has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in men’s basketball, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Loyd helped guide the ninth-ranked Greyhounds to a pair of impressive victories last week at the Cruzin’ Classic, hosted by Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida.
He averaged 24 points, 7.5 rebounds and three assists for the Greyhounds, who stayed undefeated on the year at 9-0. The Atlanta, Georgia, native shot a lofty 70.4 percent (19-for-27) from the field, including a 5-for-10 effort from behind the arc.
The highlight of the trip came when the Hounds knocked off the eighth-ranked and host Buccaneers last Tuesday. UIndy came back from a 12-point second-half deficit to earn the 78-73 win versus the previously unbeaten Bucs (6-1). Loyd poured in 17 of his team-high 21 points in the second half in the win, and finished 8-of-13 (.615) from the field to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and a block. With the Hounds down 48-37 with 16:49 to go, UIndy went to work on the Barry lead, slowly trimming the margin until a Loyd triple made it 71-69 Hounds with 3:39 to go. The Greyhounds hit 7-of-8 free throw attempts from that point to hold off the Buccaneers, including a perfect 6-for-6 effort from Loyd down the stretch.
He then responded with a career-high 27 points in the 78-51 win over Daemen College on Thursday. Loyd was 11-of-14 (.786) from the floor, including 4-of-5 (.800) from beyond the arc, and added eight rebounds and three assists as well.
This is the first career weekly selection for Loyd and the first time a Greyhound has been recognized by the league since Joe Lawson on Dec. 1, 2014.
