Drury University senior center Sanayika Shields has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in women’s basketball, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Shields averaged 18.5 points on 50 percent shooting (13-for-25) and 11.5 rebounds, while adding two blocks and a pair of steals in 55 minutes in two impressive road wins against teams that had combined to win their previous 35 games.
In Thursday’s 75-72 upset win at No. 1 Lewis, Shields scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting and pulled down 13 rebounds while adding two blocks and a steal in the win. The Flyers were 23-0 overall and 13-0 in conference play entering Thursday’s game against Drury.
Shields then hit the game winning shot at UW-Parkside on Saturday to give the 12th-ranked Lady Panthers a 69-67 GLVC road victory. She scored 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting and pulled down 10 boards against the Rangers, who had won their previous 12 games.
The Overland Park, Kansas, native earns her first career weekly award.
