Rockhurst University sophomore Joey Fischer has been respectively named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in the sport of men’s tennis, the conference announced Friday.
Fischer went 4-0 in two singles and two doubles matches against non-conference teams to lead fourth-ranked RU to two 6-3 wins, first against Lindenwood on March 6 and then March 7 over Emporia State. Both of his No. 3 singles matches went to three sets as he won 7-6, 5-7, 10-7 to beat Naoufal El Idrissi of Lindenwood, followed by a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 rally that put the sophomore over Emporia State’s Gerard Pont. A 9-7 and 8-6 win with teammate Luke Chmielewski against Lindenwood and Emporia State in doubles, respectively, came in the No. 2 position.
To date, the Georgetown, Texas, native is 6-2 in singles and 7-1 at doubles and earns his first career weekly honor.
