Quincy University sophomore utility player David Jacob and redshirt sophomore pitcher Mark Niebrugge have been respectively named the PNC Great Lakes Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week in the sport of baseball, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Both Quincy standouts helped the Hawks to a 4-1 mark last week, including a conference sweep of Bellarmine during the QU home opener that debuted its new turf infield.
Niebrugge threw a complete game one-hit shutout for his fourth win of the season to give Quincy a 4-0 win in game one against Bellarmine on Sunday. He fired eight strikeouts and allowed just one walk in the seven-inning game to help the Hawks to the weekend sweep. Niebrugge earned a team leading fourth win in his first start of the season. The sophomore holds a team low 1.42 ERA in 19 innings pitched.
The Effingham, Illinois, native earns his first career weekly award and is the first Hawks pitcher to be honored by the league since Cody King on May 6, 2014.
