University of Southern Indiana junior Johnnie Guy and Missouri S&T junior Peter Simpson have been respectively named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, it was announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Guy punched his ticket to the NCAA II Outdoor Championships as he finished 18th at the Stanford Invitational on Friday with a time of 28 minutes, 47.86 seconds, some 27 seconds under the automatic qualifying time. His time is the fastest in Division II and the second-fastest in school history, behind Dustin Emerick's mark of 28:33.35. It also ranks as the 10th-quickest time across all NCAA Divisions this year. The defending NCAA II Champion in the 10,000 meters, Guy's previous best was 29:29.67, which he ran at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays last year.
This is the second weekly outdoor honor for the Palmyra, Indiana, native as he was also recognized on April 27, 2014. The award marks back-to-back nods for USI as teammate Tyler Schickel was honored last week.
