Quincy University senior second baseman Kory Wisdom has been named PNC Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in the sport of baseball, while for the first time ever PNC GLVC Pitcher of the Week has been shared, the conference office announced Monday. Bellarmine University junior Austin Warner and University of Indianapolis sophomore Jordan Tackett have both been recognized for their impressive no-hitters last week.
It had been over two decades since a Bellarmine pitcher had tossed a complete-game no-hitter, but Warner accomplished the feat in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s. In a 4-0 victory over the Pumas, the junior left-hander did not allow a hit in 7.0 innings and recorded 10 strikeouts. In doing so, he became the first BU pitcher since Pat McClinton in 1993 to fire a complete-game no-hitter. Most recently, the Knights had a pair of no-hitters in the same week in 2011, but each time multiple pitchers were used. Warner did issue six walks, so the southpaw had to escape trouble on a few occasions to keep the no-hitter and shutout intact. The Louisville, Kentucky, native overcame a leadoff walk in the fourth and two one-out free passes in the seventh to seal his third win in three starts and Bellarmine’s third shutout this season. Warner set the tone by fanning the first two batters he faced, and then struck out two more in the fifth before striking out the side in the sixth. Warner notched his 10th strikeout for the second out in the seventh and followed by inducing a game-ending, no-hitter-clinching fly out. With the victory, Warner moved to 4-3 this season and it was the second time in three starts where he didn’t allow an earned run.
Warner’s first career accolade is also the first for a Knight pitcher since Phil Forbis on March 12, 2012.
