Lewis University freshman outfielder Ethan Bloom and McKendree University freshman pitcher Nick Yung have been respectively named the PNC Great Lakes Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week in the sport of baseball, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Bloom went 13-for-24 (.542) on the week as the Flyers turned in a 4-2 GLVC record last week against UW-Parkside and Southern Indiana, including a 3-1 mark against the Screaming Eagles.  The newcomer posted multiple hits in five of the six games, which included three doubles and a home run, while fanning just once in 24 trips to the plate.  He reached base at a .542 clip and turned in a slugging percentage of .792.

Yung tossed a masterpiece in leading McKendree to a 1-0 home win over Saint Joseph’s on Saturday. He pitched a one-hitter to snap the Bearcats’ 12-game losing streak. Yung needed just 68 pitches to finish off his gem, which marked his first collegiate victory, shutout and complete game. He walked just one batter and struck out three in the effort. It was the first one-hitter thrown by a McKendree pitcher in just over six years.
