University of Southern Indiana senior middle blocker Abbey Winter and Missouri S&T senior Jackie Pyles have garnered the first Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honors for the 2015 volleyball season, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Winter was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, while Pyles was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Pyles led S&T in digs over the weekend, averaging 4.62 per set. She registered double figures in all four matches highlighted by a season-high 19 in the season-opening win over Franklin Pierce, 3-1. The senior had six digs in the first, three each in the second and third sets and capped the match off with seven digs in the fourth and final set. She also had a pair of service aces to go along with three set assists. The senior followed that up with a 15-dig performance against Southwestern Oklahoma State later that night in the 3-0 sweep. She served two aces in the contest and dished out four set assists. In Saturday's 3-0 sweep against Southern Nazarene, she dug 16 balls off the court with nine of those coming in the third set and finished with five set assists. In the finale versus Tiffin, the defensive specialist only had 10 digs but recorded eight of them in the first two sets as the Miners cruised to a sweep of the Dragons.
Pyles earns her second career weekly honor and is the first Miner to be honored since she earned her first selection November 3, 2014.
