McKendree University senior quarterback Isaac Fisher and junior linebacker A.J. Wentland, as well as Southwest Baptist University freshman defensive back Jaylen Jones have been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Players of the Week in football, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Fisher was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, Wentland was picked Defensive Player of the Week, while Jones was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
?Wentland had a record-setting effort to begin the 2015 season in the Bearcats' 50-27 win at West Liberty. After setting a McKendree season record with 132 tackles a year ago, he claimed the team's single-game record for tackles and tied the GLVC mark on Saturday with 22 stops against the Hilltoppers. Wentland had 12 solo tackles in the game and was the only Bearcat player to reach double figures in tackles in the contest. He surpassed McKendree's 12-year old record for tackles in a game which was set by the late Cory Wilson, who had 21 stops in a 2003 outing at Saint Xavier University. The effort of the Machesney Park, Illinois, native tied the conference mark set by Central State's Darius Wilson at Saint Joseph's on Sept. 22, 2012. Wentland, who has now posted at least 10 tackles in a game in 11 of his last 12 outings dating back to the beginning of the 2014 campaign, earns his second career weekly honor as he was first recognized on Nov. 10, 2014.
