University of Southern Indiana senior Johnnie Guy and sophomore Emily Roberts have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Runners of the Week for men's and women's cross country, it was announced by the Conference office on Tuesday.
In addition to his GLVC accolade, Guy was honored late Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the NCAA Division II Men's National Athlete of the Week.
Guy finished eighth out of more than 200 competitors last Friday at the Greater Louisville Classic to lead the No. 5 Screaming Eagles to a 10th-place overall finish in the 24-team Gold Race. He was the lone DII competitor among the lead group of national-caliber DI contenders. The former NCAA DII 10,000-meter track champ and two-time top-10 XC finisher hung with many of DI's best as he finished eighth overall with an 8,000-meter time of 24 minutes, 06.8 seconds – nearly 20 seconds ahead of the nearest DII competitor.
The national honor is the second of Guy's career, as he also earned the award on Sept. 16, 2013. A native of Palmyra, Indiana, Guy notches his fourth GLVC Runner of the Week award of his career, having also been honored on Sept. 16, 2014, and Sept. 14 and Oct. 8 of the 2013 season. Guy is the first USI runner recognized by the league since Tyler Pence on Oct. 28, 2014.
