University of Indianapolis freshman setter Maggie Gibson and Rockhurst University sophomore libero Anne Hellwege have earned Baden/Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honors in the sport of volleyball, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Gibson was tabbed Baden/GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, while Hellwege was selected Baden/Defensive Player of the Week.
Gibson racked up 106 assists (9.64/set) this past week, helping the Greyhounds finish a perfect 3-0 in GLVC East Division action. She added a team-high 32 digs and recorded a pair of assist-dig double-doubles while also adding 13 kills, a .387 hitting percentage, five service aces and four block assists. In Tuesday night's sweep against in-state rival Saint Joseph's, the freshman finished with 26 assists, 12 digs and two block assists - good for her second career double-double. She followed with a stellar 43-assist performance in a 3-1 victory over Illinois Springfield Friday night. The setter also added a career-high eight kills and a .571 hitting percentage in the win. Finally, Gibson recorded 37 kills, 11 digs, two service aces and a pair of block assists in UIndy's 3-1 win over McKendree Saturday. It marked her third career double-double.
This is the South Bend, Ind., native's first career weekly honor and the second offensive Hound selected this season as Becca Lira was chosen September 21.
