University of Indianapolis senior quarterback Connor Barthel and redshirt sophomore kicker Brad Schickel, along with William Jewell College freshman defensive back Justice Taylor, have been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Players of the Week in football, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Barthel was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, Taylor was picked Defensive Player of the Week, while Schickel was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Taylor earns the first weekly honor of his career after helping rally the Cardinals back from 14 points down on two occasions to earn a 24-21 victory at Quincy on Saturday. The rookie corner totaled seven tackles on the day, six of which were solo stops, and came up big with a third-quarter interception that led to a game-tying score. With Quincy at midfield set to move into Jewell territory, Taylor intercepted a pass at his own 40-yard-line and raced 38 yards to the Hawks' 22 which would eventually set up a fourth-quarter score to tie the game, 21-21. Taylor also garnered a pass breakup in the game as well. The Aurora, Colorado native is the first Jewell defender to be recognized by the league since Eric Jackson almost one year ago on Oct. 13, 2014.
