University of Missouri-St. Louis freshman forward McKayla Harder and Bellarmine University sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Smith have been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Players of the Week in the sport of women's soccer, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Harder was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, while Smith was selected Defensive Player of the Week.
?Smith, who continues to lead the nation in goals against average, posted a season high in saves in one shutout victory over the weekend and added another shutout in a second road win for the 14th-ranked and unbeaten Knights. In Friday's 1-0 victory at reigning GLVC Champion UW-Parkside, the sophomore compiled eight saves, her highest total of the season. Only 59 seconds into the match, she made her first save and bookended her effort by making her final save with nine seconds left on a free kick from just outside the goal box. Smith preserved her sixth shutout by corralling three saves in the final 10 minutes. She followed that performance by recording another shutout in the Knights' 1-0 victory at Lewis on Sunday, and she is now 7-0-1 this season, having been a part of 10 shutouts to go along with her seven solo efforts.
The Louisville, Ky., product earns her first career weekly honor and is Bellarmine's second honoree this season as Jordan Major was chosen September 21.
