Truman State University freshman running back Andy Satulla, McKendree University sophomore linebacker Austin Weltha, and William Jewell College redshirt junior kicker Brandon Womack have been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Players of the Week in football, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Satulla was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, Weltha was picked Defensive Player of the Week, while Womack was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Weltha played a big role in McKendree’s 29-10 GLVC victory at Saint Joseph’s on Saturday. He finished the afternoon with seven tackles, four of which were solo efforts, including 2 ½ for loss. Weltha’s biggest play of the game came with 3:53 remaining. With McKendree clinging to a 16-10 lead, Weltha stepped in front of a Pumas’ pass for his first career interception and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. The 10 points allowed by the Bearcats’ defense against the Pumas marked the fewest given up by the team since the 2011 season. It was also the fewest points given up by the Bearcats in a conference game since 2010, when McKendree was members of the Mid-States Football Association. The Bloomington, Illinois native earns his first career award and is the first Bearcat defender to be recognized by the GLVC since Lucky Baar two weeks ago on Oct. 5.
