Quincy University senior midfielder Ashley Burton and sophomore defender Allison Birke have been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Players of the Week in the sport of women's soccer, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Burton was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, while Birke was selected Defensive Player of the Week.
Burton continued her terrific form with two goals and an assist last week to help the Hawks to a pair of crucial GLVC road wins. She tallied two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-0 win at previously unbeaten No. 13 Bellarmine on Friday night. The midfielder put QU ahead with a header off a corner kick in the 63rd minute before adding to that lead in the 79th minute by pouncing on a loose ball in the box and finishing it past the Knights' keeper. On Sunday at Southern Indiana, Burton's headed flick wound up at the feet of Natalie Quisenberry, who gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the third minute. The senior leads the league in goals (13) and points (31) and has recorded at least one point in 11 of her 14 games played, including the last four games.
This is the first career weekly honor for the St. Louis, Mo., native and the first offensive Hawk selection since Jaclyn Mastroianni was chosen back-to-back weeks in 2013 on September 16 and 23.
