University of Southern Indiana senior Johnnie Guy and sophomore Emily Roberts have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Runners of the Week for men's and women's cross country, it was announced by the Conference office on Tuesday.
In addition to her GLVC accolade, Roberts was honored late Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the NCAA Division II Women's National Athlete of the Week.
Facing down a field at the Evansville Invitational that included a number of NCAA Division I programs, Roberts scored a decisive win in the 5,000-meter race. She crossed the line in 17 minutes, 28.5 seconds to top runner-up Ann Asipan of Tennessee-Martin by 16 seconds, and the rest of the field by 40. She helped No. 11 USI to a 15-point win in the 10-team field. This is the second victory of the season for Roberts, to go along with top DII honors at the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships. The national honor is the first of Roberts' career and the first for a women's runner in USI history. The Fredericktown, Ohio native garners her second conference award as she was also honored with Guy in a USI sweep two weeks ago on Oct. 6.
