Bellarmine University sophomore forward Katie Fernandez and Truman State University sophomore goalkeeper Katie Mattingly have been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Players of the Week in the sport of women's soccer, it was announced by the league office Monday.
In the 2015 season's final award selections, Fernandez was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, while Mattingly was named Defensive Player of the Week.
With the opportunity to claim the program's first GLVC regular season championship, Fernandez delivered for No. 18 Bellarmine on Wednesday, netting both goals in a 2-0 victory over Southern Indiana. With only 25 seconds left in the first half, the sophomore scored the Knights' first goal off a combination assist from Mary Beth Gorham and Jordan Chlebowy, tucking in a shot from the left side for what was ultimately the game-winner. In the second half, Fernandez converted a pass from Lauren Holder into an insurance goal in the 71st minute. Behind expert finishing from the forward, the Knights secured an outright GLVC regular season title and their first top seed in the GLVC Tournament in program history.
The St. Louis, Mo., native earns her first career weekly honor and is the third offensive Knight selected as Holder was the most recent honoree September 14.
