The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has named Lewis University junior Rachel Sweeney its GLVC Women's Golf Player of the Month for October, it was announced Tuesday. Sweeney earned the honor following a vote from the league's women's golf coaches.
The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native played six rounds in three tournaments last month and averaged 73.25 strokes.
Sweeney earned medalist honors at the UMSL Fall Invite October 10-11 with a two-day, two-round total of 143 (73-70) to best the 62-golfer field. The team finished third with a 311-314=625, 17 strokes back of the winning host Tritons. She was second of 43 players in the Cal State San Marcos Fall Classic, carding a 72-73=145 through two rounds Oct. 26-27. That effort helped the Flyers to a second-place finish, as well, with scores of 316-303=619. The 303 was the team's best round of the fall season. Despite Lewis finishing ninth (328-335=663) at the Illinois Springfield-hosted Dan Salisbury Memorial to open the month on Oct. 4, the junior tied for fourth with a two-day total of 156 (75-81) in the field of 88.
This monthly honor is the first career selection for Sweeney, and she is the first Flyer to be chosen since teammate Melissa VanSisten earned the nod October 10, 2014.
