Northern Kentucky University’s Braden Bishop (Centerville, Ohio) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. The sophomore forward posted a goal in each of NKU’s two road wins last week.
In NKU’s 2-1 win at Rockhurst on Friday, Bishop converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute to give the Norse an early 1-0 advantage.
He returned in NKU’s 2-0 win at Drury on Sunday to tally an unassisted goal following a takeaway in the Drury defensive zone in the 66th minute. The score iced the win for the Norse, their 13th in conference play this season.
Bishop leads the Norse with 13 goals on the season and has added five assists for a team-high 31 points. The 2006 GLVC Freshman of the Year ranks among league leaders in both goals and points this season.
The Norse (18-0, 13-0), the top-ranked NCAA Division II men’s soccer team in the latest NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, set a GLVC record for wins in a season (13) by running the league schedule unbeaten. They are the first to win every league match since SIU Edwardsville posted a 10-0-0 record in 2003.
NKU, the top seed for the 2007 GLVC Tournament, will host No. 8 seed UW-Parkside on Sunday in the quarterfinal round of the event.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included: Lewis’ Anthony Szymel, Missouri-St. Louis’ Mike Simpson, Quincy’s Grant Ellison, Rockhurst’s Tom Heinemann and UIndy’s Michael Crane.
