Missouri S&T sophomore quarterback Tyler Swart and junior wide receiver Spencer Elrod, along with McKendree University junior linebacker A.J. Wentland, have earned the final Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honors of the 2015 football season, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Swart was tabbed GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, Wentland was picked Defensive Player of the Week, while Elrod was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Wentland earns his second consecutive Defensive Player of the Week honor after putting the finishing touches on another record-breaking season in the Bearcats' 31-3 season-ending victory at Truman State. He registered a game-high 12 tackles in the win, giving him 134 on the season. That enabled Wentland to establish a new Bearcats' single-season record in tackles for the second consecutive year. He surpassed the mark of 132 set just one year ago, and did so in one fewer regular-season contest. Wentland ended the year by posting double-digit tackles in nine of McKendree's 10 games this season. In addition to securing the Bearcats' season record for tackles, Wentland intercepted a fourth-quarter pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. It was the second pick-six in Wentland's career, with the other coming last season at Northwood. He was part of a McKendree defense that held the Bulldogs to just 175 yards of total offense, which is the fewest yards allowed by the Bearcats' defense in 2015. The Machesney Park, Illinois native garners his fourth weekly honor. In addition to last week’s award, he was also recognized on Sept. 14, 2015, and Nov. 10, 2014.
