Lewis University senior sprinter Andre Barnes and senior jumper Isaac Jean-Paul have been respectively named the first Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week of the 2015-16 season. The pair of Flyers was also tabbed as the league’s honorees to start the 2014-15 campaign as well.
Barnes crossed the line first in the 400 meters at last weekend’s GVSU Holiday Opener, hosted by Grand Valley State University. His time of 47.72 seconds met NCAA provisional qualifying standards and currently ranks first among all NCAA Division II runners. The Mount Prospect, Illinois native then ran the first leg on the 4x400-meter relay that finished first with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3 minutes, 16.79 seconds.
This is Barnes’ second weekly honor in his indoor career as he was first awarded on Dec. 11, 2014. The honor is the first for a Flyer since Shawn Milhauser on Feb. 25, 2015.
