Quincy University senior forward Kara Gerbus has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball, it was announced by the league office Monday.
The Hawks extended their winning streak to seven games after a pair of road wins against two of the top three teams in the GLVC East Division, heading into the weekend. Gerbus led Quincy in scoring in both games with 18 points at Southern Indiana followed by 17 at Bellarmine. She shot 57.9% from the field and converted 11-of-11 from the foul line and also grabbed 3.5 rebounds per game.
Quincy started with a 78-65 win at Southern Indiana on Thursday before handing Bellarmine its first lost of the season on Saturday with an 83-75 victory to complete the weekend and take ownership of the top spot in West Division standings. Against the Screaming Eagles, the forward scored the first nine points of the second half to give QU a 16-point lead, and she converted a traditional three-point play with three minutes remaining to knot the game at 70-70 against the Knights. And in the final five minutes against BU, Gerbus hit 7-of-7 free throws to help secure the win.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native claims her first career weekly honor and is the first Hawk selected since Lucy Cramsey's honor on Feb. 3, 2014.
