Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Amber Shelton (Edwardsville, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Shelton, a senior forward for the Cougars, averaged 35 points and 9.5 rebounds in two games last week.
 
Shelton tied a career-high with 37 points in SIU Edwardsville’s 65-63 win over visiting Bellarmine on Thursday. She shot 44.8 percent from the field, was 10-for-11 from the free throw line and pulled down nine rebounds in the victory. Shelton also added three steals and an assist.
 
In the Cougars’ 75-67 loss to 15th-ranked Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Shelton tallied a game-high 33 points. She also posted her first double-double of the season by grabbing 10 rebounds. Shelton shot 45 percent from the field and was 14-for-17 from the free throw line.
 
For the week, she was 22-for-49 (.449) from the field and 24-for-28 (.857) from the free throw line. She also finished with five steals and scored 70 points in 71 minutes played.
 
Shelton leads the GLVC in scoring this season and is averaging 26.8 points per game. She ranks fourth in the league in rebounding with 7.8 per game.
 
SIU Edwardsville (4-2, 1-1 GLVC) will return to action at home against Robert Morris on Wednesday.
                                  
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Kentucky Wesleyan’s LaTasha Henry, Lewis’ Kelly Dianis, Quincy’s Jessica Keller, Rockhurst’s Amy Hake and UIndy’s Karla Mast.
