University of Southern Indiana senior catcher Ryan Bertram and Missouri S&T junior pitcher Keith Coulson have been respectively named the PNC Great Lakes Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week in the sport of baseball, the conference office announced Monday.
After a slow season-opener, USI senior catcher Ryan Bertram ignited the USI offense and to a series win over No. 18 Grand Valley State in the opening weekend. Bertram was hitless in his first game, a 4-3 11-inning loss, but rebounded to go 6-for-8 with five runs scored, six RBIs, two doubles and a grand slam home run. In game two of the series with GVSU, a 13-5 win, Bertram was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs before finishing the series with a pair of hits, including a first-inning grand slam in USI's 16-6 victory in game three. For the weekend, Bertram batted .462 (6-for-13) with seven RBIs (2.1 per game), five runs scored, two doubles, and the home run.
A native of Zionsville, Indiana, Bertram scores his first career weekly award. He is the first Screaming Eagle to be recognized by the league since Kyle Kempf was named Player of the Week on April 6, 2015.
