McKendree University junior guard David Franklin has been named the final Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in men's basketball, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Franklin was a difference-maker in the Bearcats' 88-83 season-ending overtime victory at home against Illinois Springfield. He poured in a career-high 37 points, 21 of which came in the first half. The O'Fallon, Illinois product was 15-of-23 (65.2) from the field while making all five of his free throw attempts. Franklin added a team-best nine rebounds and dished out three assists to help the Bearcats overcome an 11-point deficit late in the first half. Franklin connected on consecutive three-pointers on the Bearcats' final two possessions of the period to trim an 11-point deficit down to five at the intermission. In addition to taking care of the ball in assists, he did not turn the ball over once in 45 minutes of play. The win enabled the Bearcats to clinch their first-ever GLVC Tournament bid in their fourth year in the league.
Franklin boosted his GLVC-best scoring average to 21.5 points with his effort against UIS. It was the fifth time this season that he topped the 30-point mark in a game, which leads all GLVC players.
Franklin earns his second career weekly selection as he was first chosen earlier this month on Feb. 1.
