Lewis University sophomore outfielder Jenna Cairo and senior pitcher Hannah Perryman were named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in the sport of softball, the Conference office announced Monday.
Cairo batted .476 (20-for-42) with 13 runs scored, seven RBI and six doubles out of the leadoff spot. She hit safely in 10 out of 12 contests and had five games with at least three hits. Her most impressive performance came in a 9-1 (5 inn.) win over Gannon on March 1, as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI.
Additionally, the sophomore helped Lewis to a 7-5 record over five days, including five of the seven victories coming against regional opponents. In fact, four of the five in-region wins came in the last four games. The first was a 13-5, 6-inning victory over Lake Erie, followed by an 11-7 win past Lake Superior State. Closing out the quartet of week-ending wins on Saturday were a 2-1 and 9-1 result against Northwood and Cedarville.
The Chicago, Ill., native earns her first career weekly selection and is the first Flyer picked since Lauren Hanford was the league's choice April 29, 2013.
