University of Indianapolis junior Arklon Huertas del Pino has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in the sport of women's tennis, the Conference announced Tuesday.
Huertas del Pino won two singles and one doubles match in the No. 1 slot during the Greyhounds' spring break trip in Georgia. The Ohio Dominican transfer improved to 17-2 in singles action overall and 7-1 in dual matches, beginning with a 6-1, 6-0 rout over Louis Tourtois of Shorter Wednesday afternoon. The junior, who is ranked No. 20 individually in singles, followed Thursday with an impressive 7-5, 6-1 win against the 14th-ranked singles player in the nation, Georgia College's Yannick Hass. That singles victory nearly sparked a comeback win against the #10 Bobcats, but the #18 Greyhounds fell just shy, 5-4.
In doubles, Huertas del Pino partnered with Andy Morlet to defeat Shorter's Tourtois/Jimmy Kerjouan duo, 8-4.
This is the Lima, Peru, native's first career weekly honor, and he is the first Hound chosen since Luke Hubert was the opening selection this season on February 16.
