University of Indianapolis junior Arklon Huertas del Pino has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in the sport of men's tennis, the Conference announced Tuesday.
Huertas del Pino went a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles this past week, helping 19th-ranked Indianapolis earn crucial regional victories against No. 37 Grand Valley State (8-1) and No. 36 Ferris State (7-2).
The junior, a transfer from Ohio Dominican, began the week with an impressive three-set tiebreak win against 13th regionally-ranked Alex van de Steenoven in the UIndy Tennis Center. After splitting the first two sets, Huertas del Pino won the tiebreak by a resounding 10-0 score. He followed Saturday with perhaps an even more notable victory, defeating Ferris State's Vasil Surduk 6-3, 6-3 on the outdoor courts at Center Grove High School (Greenwood, IN). Surduk entered the match ranked No. 39 in Division II and No. 3 in the Midwest region among singles players.
In doubles, Huertas del Pino partnered with Andy Morlet to defeat GVSU's Zach Phillips/van de Steenoven tandem, 8-3, before besting the Bulldogs' 3rd regionally-ranked duo of Surduk/Nur Adim Ramdani Iswan, 8-6.
This is the Lima, Peru, native's second career weekly honor and his second in a row, as he was last week's selection March 22.
