University of Indianapolis freshman Hanna Volikova has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in the sport of women's tennis, the Conference announced Tuesday.
Volikova, who joined the Greyhounds prior to the spring season, went a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles action this past week, helping No. 27 UIndy earn regional wins against No. 30 Grand Valley State (5-4) and Ferris State (8-1).
Volikova first handed 14th regionally-ranked Abby Perkins a straight-set, 6-0, 6-3, loss in Friday's thrilling 5-4 win against GVSU. Her singles win tied the match at 2-2 and helped the Greyhounds win their first game against a nationally-ranked opponent this season. She followed Saturday with another two-set win, this one a 6-3, 6-4 decision against ShawneeAnn Brelsford of Ferris State, who checked in at No. 16 in the region in the latest ITA rankings.
On the doubles court, she partnered with Florence Renard to defeat GVSU's Rachel Sumner/Aimee Moccia duo, 8-1, and the Bulldogs' Brelsford/Nika Hein pair, 8-0, earning the Hounds' first point in both eventual team victories.
This is the Yalta, Crimea, native's first career weekly honor, and she is the first Hound chosen since Brooke Boyts was selected March 31, 2015.
