Drury University sophomore third baseman Kaelie Smith and University of Indianapolis senior catcher Jenny Thompson were named Great Lakes Valley Conference co-Players of the Week, while Indianapolis senior Morgan Foley was named GLVC Pitcher of the Week in the sport of softball, the Conference office announced Monday.
Foley garnered all four pitching wins over the weekend, compiling a 0.88 ERA and striking out 42 in 24 innings. The week included her fourth no-hitter of the season versus Quincy Sunday, one day after nearly no-hitting Truman.
Facing the regionally ranked Bulldogs in game one Saturday, Foley rolled through 6 1/3 innings of no-hit softball before TSU finally managed a hit. Up 5-0 with one out in the seventh inning, TSU clean-up hitter Ashley Murphy connected for a home run to end the no-no and the shutout. Foley, who finished with 11 Ks and two walks, was then relieved to save her for game two.
Her game-two start ended in another victory, as she overcame some early trouble to give her team a chance to win it in the seventh and final frame. Foley allowed two first-inning tallies but followed with six scoreless to finish with 10 strikeouts against three walks.
The senior notched two more wins versus Quincy Sunday, starting with a no-hitter in game one. She retired each of the first 12 batters, pitched around three walks in the fifth and sixth combined before striking out the side in the seventh. The All-American finished with 13 strikeouts, zero wild pitches and zero hit batsmen, facing just three over the minimum.
Foley picked up a relief win in game two, tossing the final 3 2/3 innings while her offense overcame a 2-0 deficit to up her record to 35-2 on the year. She fanned eight and walked two while her lone run allowed was unearned.
The Louisville, Ky., native garners her 11th and final career weekly selection and her fifth this season.
