Bellarmine University’s Angela Smith (Greenville, Ind.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Smith, a senior guard for the Knights, led her team to a pair of wins at the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge hosted by Northwood over the weekend.
Smith averaged 23 points, 2.5 assists, two rebounds and two steals per game in the victories. She shot 52 percent from the field and was 14-for-14 from the free-throw line.
In Bellarmine’s 84-61 win over Lake Superior State on Saturday, Smith poured in 20 points and had two rebounds, two steals and two assists. She was 6-for-13 from the field and knocked down three three-point field goals.
Smith netted a season-high 26 points in Bellarmine’s 89-86 win over host Northwood on Sunday. She was 7-for-12 from the field and converted all nine of her free throw attempts. In addition, Smith pulled down two rebounds and had three assists and two steals.
She now has 1,362 career points and moved into the top-10 on Bellarmine’s all-time scoring list. Smith has 199 career three-point field goals and is one shy of becoming just the second Knight to hit 200 three-point field goals in her career.
On the year, Smith is averaging a team-best 14.5 points per game and 2.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest.
The Knights (8-5, 0-2) have won four of their past five games and will return to action against sixth-ranked Drury at home on Thursday.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury’s Becky Flippin, Kentucky Wesleyan’s LaTasha Henry, Missouri-Rolla’s Tamara McCaskill and Rockhurst’s Meghan Hurley.
