Bellarmine University freshman Maggie Walroth has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in the sport of women’s tennis, the Conference announced Tuesday.
With her squad needing two victories to ensure placement in the GLVC Tournament, Walroth went a combined 4-0 in an 8-1 win at McKendree on Friday and a 9-0 victory over Illinois Springfield on Saturday.
Against the Bearcats, the freshman dominated at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kelcie Comley. She also combined with Caitlin Hanley for an 8-2 triumph over Jessica Gaither and Charlee Goodman at No. 2 doubles.
In the GLVC Tournament berth-clinching victory over the Prairie Stars, Walroth outlasted the 2015 Freshman of the Year Jane Carter 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Hanley for a commanding 8-0 win over Carter and Faith Hook at No. 1 doubles.
Walroth finished the regular season with a team-best 38 combined wins, going 18-8 in singles play and 20-6 in doubles action.
This is the Cincinnati, Ohio, native’s first career weekly honor, and she is the first Knight selected since Evann Waschuk was the February 17, 2015 honoree.
