Bellarmine University’s Angela Smith (Greenville, Ind.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The senior guard paced the Knights in a pair of victories last week, including an upset of third-ranked Drury University on Thursday, 86-78.

Smith posted the second-highest point total of her career with a 27-point effort in the win over the Panthers. She canned four three-pointers in the contest, becoming just the second Knight to ever connect for 200 three-pointers in a career. Smith also had five rebounds, four assists, one steal and was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.

She returned in Bellarmine’s 77-63 win over visiting Rockhurst on Saturday to score a game-high 24 points. Smith again drilled four three-pointers and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. In addition, she had six rebounds and four steals, helping Bellarmine earn its fourth straight victory.

For the week, Smith averaged 25.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game. She shot 40 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from the three-point line and was 15-for-16 (.938) from the free throw line.

On the year, Smith is averaging 15.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. She is shooting 85.9 percent from the free-throw line and is on pace to break the all-time free throw percentage mark at Bellarmine. In addition, Smith is just 25 three-pointers shy of the school record for three-point field goals made.

Bellarmine (10-5) is tied for third place in the GLVC East Division with a 2-2 record. The Knights travel to Saint Joseph’s and UIndy this week.

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury’s Melanie Oliver, Kentucky Wesleyan’s Laura McClintic, Lewis’ Jenny Turpel, Missouri S&T’s Katie McElrath, Missouri St. Louis’ Courtney Watts, Rockhurst’s Julie Cook, Southern Indiana’s Jasmine Baines, SIU Edwardsville’s Whitney Sykes, UIndy’s Isabell Rhenwrick and UW-Parkside’s Karla Ming.
