Indianapolis, Ind. – Lewis University’s Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. The sophomore goalkeeper registered shutout victories over Quincy University and No. 13 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville over the weekend.
Szymel picked up the win in the Flyers’ 2-0 win over visiting Quincy on Sept. 15. He recorded two saves to record his third shutout of the season.
In Lewis’ 1-0 win over SIU Edwardsville on Sept. 17, Szymel registered a career-high seven saves to help protect the Flyers’ one-goal advantage. He made two point-blank saves and added a high-leaping grab of a Cougars’ threatening cross late in the contest to preserve the win.
Szymel now has four shutouts on the season and is ranked second in the conference in goals against average (0.61). He is also ranked third in the GLVC in save percentage (.833), having stopped 25 of 30 shots on goal.
Lewis improved to 7-1-0 overall on the year with the wins and is now 5-1-0 in the GLVC. The Flyers’ have allowed just five goals this season and will look to continue the strong play at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the University of Missouri-Rolla this weekend.
