Northern Kentucky University’s Julianne Hoekzema (Fairfield, Ohio) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Hoekzema, a junior runner for the Norse, placed second in the 5,000-meter run at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday. She finished the event in a time of 17:34.99, topping her personal best by 52 seconds.
The time also set a new NKU school record in the 5,000 meters and Hoekzema became the first Norse track athlete to earn a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. Hoekzema currently ranks fourth on the NCAA performance list in the event.
Other top performers in GLVC last week included Bellarmine’s Kelsey Love, Southern Indiana’s Heather Cooksey, SIU Edwardsville’sShelinda Brackett and UW-Parkside’s Jessica Lamp.
