The University of Indianapolis’ Freddie Helms (Evansville, Ind.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Helms, a junior sprinter for the Greyhounds, posted a strong showing at the Wabash Open in Knowling Fieldhouse over the weekend. He equaled a school, meet and fieldhouse record by finishing the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.39 seconds.
The time allowed Helms to capture first place in the event and is also a provisional time for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.
In addition, Helms ran a personal-best time of 22.54 seconds in the 200-meter dash at the Wabash Open to finish second in the event to teammate Anthony Flournoy.
UIndy will return to action at the Hoosier Hills Open in Bloomington and the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational this weekend.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Bellarmine’s Neal Masterson and SIU Edwardsville’s Chris Wright.
