Bellarmine University’s Angela Smith (Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The senior guard helped the Knights post wins over Northern Kentucky and Kentucky Wesleyan in league action last week.

In Bellarmine’s 73-60 win over visiting Northern Kentucky on Tuesday, Smith scored 18 points and collected a career-high nine rebounds. She was 7-for-18 (.389) from the field and also had two assists and two steals.

Smith returned in Saturday’s 78-72 win at Kentucky Wesleyan to again post 18 points. She fell just shy of a triple-double in the victory by adding eight rebounds and seven assists. Smith was 6-for-10 (.600) from the field and canned all six of her free throw attempts.

On the week, Smith averaged 18 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She was 13-for-28 (.464) from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

Smith, who is averaging 15.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this season, is currently shooting 85.8 percent from the free throw line for her career. The effort would currently top the Bellarmine all-time mark of 85 percent. In addition, Smith is third on Bellarmine’s all-time scoring list with 1,588 career points and needs just 99 more points to move into second-place.

Bellarmine (19-9) moved into a three-way tie for first-place in the GLVC East Division with the victories. The Knights are 11-6 in the GLVC and will travel to Lewis on Thursday.

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury’s Molly Carter, Kentucky Wesleyan’s LaTasha Henry, Lewis’ Jenna Mooberry, Quincy’s Jessica Keller, Rockhurst’s Amy Hake, SIU Edwardsville’s Amber Shelton, UIndy’s Samantha Meisel and UW-Parkside’s Amanda Gibson.
