Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Scott Block (Hanover Park, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Block, a junior thrower for the Cougars, posted an impressive effort in the field events at a pair of invitationals over the weekend and notched two NCAA Division II provisional marks and one automatic qualifying mark.
He opened the weekend with a first-place finish in the 35-pound hammer throw at the Washington (Mo.) Invitational on Friday night. Block broke the SIUE school record and recorded a NCAA Division II provisional mark with a throw of 55.61 meters.
At the SIU Carbondale Spring Classic on Saturday, Block won the discus throw with a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark of 52.14 meters. He also recorded a NCAA Division II provisional mark in the shot put with a throw of 16.74 meters.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Missouri S&T’s Heath Groom, Saint Joseph’s Tadd Hettinger and UIndy’s Craig Myers.
