Drury University’s Steve Wilczewski is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. The junior forward helped the Panthers remain unbeaten in 2008 with a pair of conference victories over the weekend.
Drury began the weekend with a 2-1 win at previously unbeaten Missouri-St. Louis on Friday. Wilczewski opened the scoring on the afternoon by heading in a goal in the 16th minute on an assist from Jake Allison. He quickly added an assist on Marco Cherisma’s game-winning goal just over two minutes later.
Wilczewski also played a key role in the Panthers’ decisive 6-1 win over visiting Southern Indiana on Sunday. With Drury leading 1-0 late in the first half, Wilczewski scored the game-winning goal in the 44th minute from three-yards out unassisted. He added an insurance goal for the Panthers in the 57th minute, quickly answering the Eagles’ lone goal of the contest and providing his team a 4-1 lead.
On the week, Wilczewski finished with three goals and an assist, including the game-winner against USI. He converted all three of his shots on goal and three of his four shots overall.
Wilczewski is second in the GLVC this season with 12 points on five goals and two assists. His five goals lead the Panthers and rank the junior third in the league.
Drury moved to 4-0-0 overall and to 2-0-0 in the league with the victories. The Panthers will visit Kentucky Wesleyan and Bellarmine this weekend.
