Lewis University’s Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. The senior goalkeeper posted 10 saves in helping the Flyers post a 1-0-1 record against a pair of the league’s top teams.
Szymel guided the Flyers to a 2-1 victory over host Drury on Friday. He turned away four shots in 90 minutes to secure the win.
The standout goalkeeper registered six saves in Lewis’ scoreless tie with ninth-ranked Rockhurst on Sunday. He recorded all 110 minutes in goal for the Flyers in the contest.
Szymel, on the year, has posted a record of 12-1-1, is allowing just 0.58 goals-per-game and has posted an 85.5 save percentage.
Lewis (12-1-1, 7-1-1 GLVC) pushed its unbeaten streak to nine matches with the victories over the weekend and is now in third-place in the GLVC. The Flyers will host Missouri-St. Louis and Southern Indiana this weekend.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included: Northern Kentucky’s Michael Lavric, Quincy’s Kyle Dillman, Rockhurst’s Kyle Samuelson and UIndy’s Brian Fishback.
