Rockhurst University’s Katy Hernandez is the Baden/Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Player of the Week. The junior outside hitter guided the Hawks to a pair of victories at the 2008 Asics GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Volleyball Tournament over the weekend and was one of six GLVC athletes to earn all-tournament honors at the event.
On the weekend, Hernandez posted 2.91 kills and 2.73 digs per set against three of the top teams in the GLIAC.
She tallied 11 kills and nine digs in the Hawks’ only loss on the weekend, a 3-0 decision to Hillsdale on Friday.
Hernandez returned on Friday evening to help the Hawks collect a 3-0 win over Wayne State. In the victory, Hernandez posted eight kills and 13 digs.
She concluded her weekend by notching 13 kills, eight digs and three blocks in the Hawks’ 3-2 win over Michigan Tech on Saturday.
Hernandez is now averaging 3.12 kills and 2.98 digs per set this season. She has maintained a .190 hitting percentage and is leading the Hawks with 3.47 points per set on the year.
Rockhurst was one of three GLVC teams to post a winning record at the Crossover Tournament. The Hawks (15-10, 7-5 GLVC) will return to action at Southern Indiana and Kentucky State this weekend.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included: Drury’s Megan Warhol, Lewis’ Justina Begemann, Missouri-St. Louis’ Lisa Brinker, Northern Kentucky’s Kelsey Wesaw, Quincy’s Katie Ebbing, Saint Joseph’s Sara Cramer and UIndy’s Cheneta Morrison.
